You shot a lovely portrait and realized later that the background could benefit from some artistic blur. It used to be that if you didn’t get it in camera, you were stuck. Most cameras would see this scene with a lot of contrast and a blown-out sky.

Here’s the same image as above, as captured as a ProRAW image on the iPhone 12 Pro. (Converted to JPEG for size reasons here.)

Lightroom ignores the Local Tone Mapping information and reads the ProRAW file as just another DNG. Note the extremes in the dark and light areas of the histogram.

A quick edit of the ProRAW image in Lightroom reveals the color in the sky and the detail in the dark foreground. It’s not exactly the same as as it appears in the Photos app, but it’s close. We could further play with the Color settings to get it closer if we wanted.

Here are two examples of panoramas shot at the same location using different cameras: a mirrorless Fujifilm X-T1 and an iPhone XS. The first one looks better to my eye, but also required that I haul my camera, lens, and a portable tripod on the hike. -Jeff
